Smithville Partners with Calix to Move Fiber Forward
5/24/10
PETALUMA, Calif. - Calix announced that Indiana communications service provider Smithville Telephone Company (Smithville) has selected the Calix Unified Access portfolio to bring fiber access solutions to approximately 34,000 homes and businesses across the communities it serves. The company plans to move "Fiber Forward," replacing its aging copper infrastructure with an advanced, standards-based fiber access network engineered to deliver between 100 megabits per second (Mbps) to one gigabit per second (Gbps) to every premises.

The $128 million initiative, the value of which includes plant engineering, materials, labor, and other costs including access equipment, is composed of a $90 million dollar Rural Utilities Service (RUS) loan complemented by a $38 million Broadband Stimulus award funded through the Broadband Initiative Program (BIP). Scheduled to complete in 2013, thousands of homes and businesses in Smithville's service area have already been installed during the initial phases of this project, and are benefiting from advanced IPTV, ultra-high-speed data services, and reliable voice services delivered via gigabit passive optical networking (GPON) and Active Ethernet (AE) technologies across the Calix Unified Access Infrastructure.

"As we considered the increasing demand for high-bandwidth broadband services as well as the economic development needs of the communities in our service areas, moving 'Fiber Forward' was the right thing to do," said Darby McCarty, CEO of Smithville. "Not only can we use this network to deliver world-class information, communication, and entertainment services to our residential and business subscribers, but we can also dramatically reduce our long-term operational costs -- which is critical as we adapt our business model to reflect both a changing regulatory environment and increasing competition. The Calix Unified Access portfolio provides us with the tools we need to delight our customers efficiently and cost-effectively, and we look forward to the completion of this project when every Smithville subscriber will have access to the power of fiber."

Smithville is Indiana's largest independent operating company (IOC). This project, one of the largest of its kind in the country, is being driven by emerging consumer demands, heightening competition, and a desire to provide subscribers with an infrastructure that can support the advanced broadband services of today and tomorrow while lowering ongoing operational costs. The access equipment portion of this project is being built with the Calix Unified Access portfolio, including the Calix C7 Multiservice Access Platform (MSAP), the E7 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP), the 700GX/700GE ONT portfolio, and Calix Management System (CMS) to deliver a variety of services, from advanced IPTV to business services. Calix Compatible partners like Cisco are also providing key components of the overall solution, delivering IPTV middleware and set-top boxes.

For a video tutorial of the scope, vision, and subscriber experience of the Smithville initiative, please click on any one of the seven educational videos available at the following link: http://www.smithville.net/fiber/why.

"Smithville stands out among a growing cadre of North American communications service providers who have both staked out a bold fiber access vision for the communities that they serve and aligned the resources necessary to bring this vision to fruition," said John Colvin, vice president of field operations at Calix. "Leveraging both existing government loan programs (RUS) and Stimulus funds from the BIP, the scope and scale of Smithville's investment in its community will forever change the face of communications in southern Indiana. Calix is proud to be a key strategic partner to Smithville in helping to make this broadband vision of the future a reality."

PartTec Licenses New Technology for Homeland Security
4/09/10
Bloomington, IN (April 9, 2010) - PartTec, a South Central Indiana-based provider of radiation detection equipment, has signed a license agreement with the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This license allows PartTec to manufacture and market an innovative neutron detector system. Uses for this groundbreaking detector range from neutron research to advanced security applications such as monitoring for the presence of illicit radioactive material at our borders.
Neutron detectors are specialized scientific instruments used in areas such as nuclear reactors to identify radiation hazards; neutron research facilities developing research in energy and manufacturing; and security agencies monitoring for illicit radioactive material. PartTec will focus on marketing its product for security applications and neutron research.
For the past five years, PartTec has partnered with Oak Ridge to provide neutron detection technology in the DOE lab's one-of-a-kind facility. PartTec re-engineered the DOE's scintillator detector system as a better alternative to current systems that use helium-3 technology. Recently, it became apparent that the global inventory of helium-3 was nearly gone and new sources are inadequate to fulfill the large demand for neutron detectors. This supply constraint, along with an increasing demand from homeland security and other security agencies fueled the need for new neutron detector technology.
"We take a lot of pride in the fact that a technology we helped develop can be used to keep our borders secure and in research that improves our day to day lives," said Herschel Workman, chief executive officer of PartTec. "Oak Ridge National Laboratory has been a strong partner. Without their collaboration we wouldn't be in the position we are now - on the verge of taking this groundbreaking neutron detector to market."
Both PartTec and Oak Ridge National Lab believe this system is the leading solution to replace the older helium-3 technology being used in neutron detectors around the globe.

About Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Located in Oak Ridge Tennessee, Oak Ridge National Laboratory is home to two of the world's most advanced neutron scattering research facilities: The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor. The research conducted in these facilities has tremendous implications for both science and industry. About 600 dedicated staff operate and maintain both facilities. Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Basic Energy Sciences. Find more information at www.ornl.gov.

About PartTec, Ltd.
PartTec, Ltd. has an established track record as leader in scientific research and advanced manufacturing services for laboratories. PartTec will market its new advanced neutron detectors to research laboratories, the military, and homeland security agencies. PartTec has administrative and scientific offices in Bloomington, IN., and engineering, design and manufacturing facilities in Linton, IN. Find more information at www.PartTec.com.

HealthLINC to Help With Electronic Health Records Transition
4/06/10
Bloomington, IN, March 30, 2010 - U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that HealthBridge was awarded federal funding to help area physicians transition to electronic health records. The announcement is part of a multi-phased effort by HHS to improve the quality and efficiency of health care by moving the country toward computerized health records.

HealthBridge's tri-state application includes partnerships with several leading health IT organizations throughout the region including HealthLINC, Collaborating Communities Health Information Exchange, Northeast Kentucky Regional Health Information Organization, and the University of Kentucky as well as area universities and community colleges and state government organizations.

"We believe our partnership with HealthBridge will help our region to expand rapidly the use of electronic health records and health information exchange," said Dr. Todd Rowland, Executive Director of HealthLINC, a health information exchange serving central and southern Indiana.

The REC program will offer technical assistance to small physician practices, community health centers and other priority providers. The federal funds do not pay for electronic systems directly but will offer group purchasing arrangements with steep discounts on health IT for physicians.

The announcement by HHS included more than $750 million in grant awards. The assistance at the state and regional level will facilitate health care providers' efforts to adopt and use electronic health records (EHRs) in a meaningful manner that has the potential to improve the quality and efficiency of health care for all Americans. Of the over $750 million investment, $386 million will go to 40 states and qualified State Designated Entities (SDEs) to facilitate health information exchange (HIE) at the state level, while $375 million will go to an initial 32 non-profit organizations to support the development of regional extension centers (RECs) that will aid health professionals to implement and use health information technology.

The REC awards are funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act which established an incentive program for qualified health care professionals and hospitals to demonstrate "meaningful use" of electronic health records and health information exchange. HealthBridge estimates that meaningful use incentive payments could inject more than $200 million into the tri-state region over the next five years.

More information on the Regional Extension Center program is available at www.healthit.hhs.gov. Regional Extension Center support is provided by the Office of the National Coordinator, Department of Health and Human Services under cooperative agreement number 90RC0025/01.

Duke Energy Awards $18,000 Grant for Data Center Ready Site
3/03/10
PLAINFIELD, Ind. - Duke Energy is awarding $18,000 to the Bloomington Economic Development Corporation to document two "data center-ready" sites capable of attracting more information technology businesses to Monroe County.

This funding will help pay for environmental and hydrological studies, as well as for professional surveys, maps and marketing materials, making the sites more attractive to businesses that house computer data centers (also known as server farms).

"We're committed to helping our communities prepare for economic growth," said Pam Chapman, Duke Energy Indiana area manager for Monroe County. "This funding will allow the BEDC to prepare these sites to meet national standards for data centers. Meeting those standards is critical to attracting these kinds of businesses to our area."

The standards, established by the Telecommunications Industry of America, include the price of power, secure location, networking infrastructure, accessibility, talent pool, and local incentives.

"BusinessWeek magazine previously reported that Bloomington is the third-best place to house a data center in the U.S.," said Ron Walker, president of the BEDC. "Specifically, the magazine reported that it would cost approximately 38 percent less to build and operate a data center here as compared to Boston. Data center operators will bring new investment, new job creation and additional exposure to our community. In addition, the creation of shared data center space will greatly assist existing and start-up companies, regardless of the industry."

Walker added that development of data center-ready sites fits well with the Bloomington Technology Partnership's efforts to strengthen and build recognition of Bloomington's technology business community. This public-private partnership was created in 2008 to foster the growth of Bloomington's emerging high-tech economy.

The grant is made possible through Duke Energy's Community Growth Partnership Grant Program and is aimed at generating new jobs and capital investment in Indiana. Over the past three years, Duke Energy has awarded 15 of these grants totaling more than $198,000 to Indiana economic development organizations.

Historically, Duke Energy has made a strong commitment to economic development throughout its service territory. As a result of its leadership role in this arena, Duke Energy has received Site Selection Magazine's Top Ten Utility Economic Development Award for 11 consecutive years.

Duke Energy Indiana's operations provide 6,500 megawatts of electricity capacity to approximately 780,000 customers, making it the state's largest electric supplier.

Headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., Duke Energy is a Fortune 500 company traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol DUK. More information about the company is available on the Internet at: www.duke-energy.com.
